In 2009, I herniated a disc in my lower back due to playing sports my whole life and not properly strengthening my back. I also struggled with some minor anxiety, especially when it came to the heat. I read about Bikram Yoga and some testimonials about other individuals who had the same back issue as I did and also about people who had suffered some anxiety. My doctor had always told me to give yoga a try. I go to the gym almost every day and felt like yoga was not a challenge for me. After pondering with the idea, I said, what do I have to lose? In September of 2010, I decided to try my first Bikram Yoga class. By myself, in the 105 degree heat which sometimes gave me anxiety, with an iffy back. I remember walking in the studio and being happily greeted by Jessica, who was my first instructor. I gave her a quick overview about my issues and she told me, “Just breathe and sit when you need to but try to stay in the room!” I thought to myself, “What?!” Well long story short, I did every single posture and battled the heat. As I drove home I was so proud of myself for accomplishing something I never thought I would have done! I instantly became hooked.
To this day, I have had no lower back pain or issues, and my anxiety is completely gone. This yoga is challenging for my mind, body and soul.
